On August 15, 1977, a radio telescope in Ohio detected an unusually strong, narrowband signal coming from the sky. The Wow! Signal lasted only about 72 seconds and was never detected again, leaving astronomers without a definitive explanation.
The event became one of the most famous mysteries in the history of SETI, the scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Although its characteristics initially made an extraterrestrial transmission an intriguing possibility, there is still no evidence that the signal came from aliens.
What Was the Wow! Signal?
The signal was detected by the Big Ear radio telescope operated by Ohio State University during a routine sky survey.
Astronomer Jerry Ehman noticed the unusual detection while reviewing a computer printout several days later. The data appeared as the sequence 6EQUJ5, which represented the changing intensity of the radio signal across consecutive measurements.
Ehman was so surprised by what he saw that he wrote “Wow!” in the margin of the printout. The handwritten note gave the event its name.
The signal was particularly interesting because it was:
- unusually strong;
- narrow in frequency;
- close to the 1420 MHz hydrogen line;
- consistent with a source passing through the telescope’s beam;
- detected only once.
The signal itself was not an audio recording. The Big Ear did not record the event as sound. The famous “Wow!” signal is the printed data from the telescope’s observations.
Why Was the Signal So Unusual?
One of the most important characteristics was the way its intensity changed over time.
The signal gradually increased in strength, reached a peak and then declined. This pattern was consistent with the telescope’s beam moving across a fixed source in the sky as Earth rotated.
That made a nearby terrestrial source less likely and suggested that the signal came from a celestial direction. However, this characteristic does not prove that the source was extraterrestrial.
Its frequency was another reason for the interest.
The detection occurred near 1420 MHz, the frequency associated with neutral hydrogen’s natural radio emission. This part of the radio spectrum has long been important in radio astronomy and SETI research.
Did the Wow! Signal Come From Aliens?
There is no scientific evidence that it did.
The signal had some characteristics that researchers look for when searching for possible technological transmissions, which is why it became an important SETI candidate.
But an unusual signal is not enough to establish extraterrestrial intelligence.
The biggest problem is that astronomers never detected the signal again despite repeated efforts to observe the region and search for a recurrence. The SETI Institute notes that a signal would need independent confirmation or repeated detection before scientists could reasonably claim an extraterrestrial discovery.

Why Wasn’t It Detected Again?
The original detection was extremely brief. The Big Ear observed the relevant region as part of its normal sky survey, and the signal disappeared after passing through the telescope’s field of view.
Researchers subsequently tried to find it again using additional observations.
Those searches did not produce another detection of the same signal. Breakthrough Listen, for example, later conducted targeted observations using the Green Bank Telescope and the Allen Telescope Array after a potential stellar source was proposed. No technological signal matching the Wow! event was found in those observations.
This lack of repetition is one of the central reasons the mystery remains unresolved.
Where Did the Wow! Signal Come From?
The exact source has never been identified.
The original observations placed the signal in the general direction of the Sagittarius region of the sky. Because the telescope’s configuration produced two possible sky positions, researchers have historically had to consider more than one potential location.
A 2025 reanalysis of previously unpublished Ohio SETI observations refined the possible positions and reported a frequency of approximately 1420.726 MHz. The researchers also estimated a higher peak intensity than earlier analyses had suggested.
These revisions do not identify the source, but they provide more precise information for future investigations.
Could It Have Been a Natural Phenomenon?
Yes. In fact, recent research has strengthened the case that a natural astrophysical event could explain the detection.
In 2024, researchers from the University of Puerto Rico’s Planetary Habitability Laboratory proposed that the signal could have originated from a small cloud of cold neutral hydrogen.
Their hypothesis is based partly on observations from archival Arecibo data. The researchers found weaker narrowband emissions associated with cold hydrogen clouds near the hydrogen-line frequency. They proposed that a temporary burst of radiation could have caused an unusually bright emission from such a cloud.
Possible mechanisms discussed in the research include maser-like amplification or superradiance, potentially triggered by a powerful transient event such as a magnetar flare.
Importantly, this is a hypothesis, not a confirmed explanation.
The researchers themselves describe it as a proposed astrophysical explanation, and additional observations are needed to establish whether such a process could actually produce the 1977 event.
What About the Comet Explanation?
Another hypothesis proposed that the signal came from a comet and its surrounding hydrogen cloud.
A 2017 study argued that comets 266P/Christensen and P/2008 Y2 (Gibbs) could have been responsible and reported radio emissions near the hydrogen-line frequency from observations of comets.
However, this explanation has not become a scientific consensus.
The SETI Institute has highlighted problems with the comet hypothesis, including questions about whether the comets were in the correct position and whether their emissions could reproduce the characteristics of the original event.
More recent work from the Arecibo Wow! project also argues that known comets do not adequately explain the signal’s observed properties.
Therefore, it would be misleading to state that scientists discovered the signal came from a comet.
Was the Wow! Signal Human-Made Interference?
Scientists have considered terrestrial interference as another possible explanation.
The signal’s characteristics make ordinary interference difficult to establish as the cause. Its rise and fall matched the telescope’s expected response to a fixed celestial source, and the frequency was within a protected radio astronomy band.
Still, the absence of a confirmed alternative does not automatically prove an astronomical origin.
The most scientifically cautious position is that the event was a genuine astronomical detection that remains unexplained, while researchers continue to investigate possible natural and artificial explanations.
What Happened to the Big Ear Telescope?
The telescope that detected the signal no longer exists.
The Big Ear operated for decades as an Ohio State University radio observatory and conducted SETI observations from 1973 until the project ended in the 1990s.
The telescope was ultimately dismantled in 1998 after the land on which it stood was sold for development.
The original Wow! data, however, have continued to be studied.
Modern researchers have revisited archival observations using newer analytical techniques, which has allowed scientists to refine some of the signal’s properties decades after the original event.
What Scientists Know Today
After nearly five decades, several facts about the event are well established:
The detection happened: The Big Ear recorded a strong, narrowband radio signal on August 15, 1977.

More recent research, however, has provided plausible natural explanations. The 2024 Arecibo Wow! study proposed a transient event involving cold hydrogen clouds, while its 2025 follow-up reanalysis found additional evidence favoring an astrophysical origin over radio interference.
That does not mean scientists have solved the mystery.
The hydrogen-cloud explanation remains a hypothesis that requires further testing. Likewise, the absence of a confirmed natural source means the event cannot simply be assigned to one explanation with certainty.
Why Does the Wow! Signal Still Matter?
The scientific importance of the event goes beyond the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
It demonstrates how difficult it can be to interpret a single unusual observation. A signal can appear highly unusual without providing enough information to determine its origin.
It also shows why SETI researchers place such importance on repeatability and independent confirmation. A second detection would provide crucial information about whether the event was periodic, transient, natural or technological.
The ongoing investigation has also encouraged researchers to examine natural astrophysical phenomena that could potentially resemble technological signals.
The Mystery Continues
The Wow! Signal remains one of the most intriguing unexplained radio detections ever recorded.
There is no reliable evidence that it was a message from an extraterrestrial civilization, but there is also no definitive identification of its source. New analysis has made the picture more precise and has produced plausible natural explanations, particularly involving transient emission from neutral hydrogen clouds.
For now, the scientifically responsible answer is also the simplest: we do not know what produced the Wow! Signal.
Future searches and improved analysis of archival data may eventually reveal what happened on that August night in 1977. Until then, the event remains an unusual piece of radio astronomy history rather than confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial contact.
